TOPIC

This article describes the kind and size of memory (RAM) you can use to upgrade your iBook computer, and how to install a memory module in it.

DISCUSSION

You can upgrade the memory (RAM) in your iBook computer using SDRAM SO-DIMM memory modules. Table 1 outlines the maximum amount of memory you can install, and the sizes of SO-DIMMs that are compatible with iBook computers. The computer's single memory slot can accept one 144-pin, 30 mm memory module.

    Notes:
    1. A 256 MB module can be used only if the iBook Firmware Update has been installed; otherwise, a 128 MB module is the largest capacity.

    Table 1 iBook memory configurations

iBook computers do not use the same memory modules as PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze keyboard) or iMac computers. iBook computers require smaller, 30 mm memory modules as illustrated in Figure 1.

    Installing additional memory

Follow these steps to install a memory module in an iBook computer:
      1. Remove the keyboard.
      2. Remove the AirPort card (if one is installed).
      3. Remove the RAM shield.
      4. Insert the memory module into the expansion slot and press it down to secure it in place.

No special tools are required. Only standard and phillips-head screwdrivers are needed.
