    Introduction

The Apple iMac, the Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White version only), and the 1999 PowerBook G3 (Bronze version only) uses auto negotiation to determine what speed (10 Mbit or 100 Mbit) and duplex (half or full) to use for the Built in Ethernet. Duplexer is an unsupported system extension that allows you to disable the auto negotiation and to use a set speed (10 Mbit or 100 Mbit) and duplex (Full or Half) for the built in Ethernet of an Apple iMac, a Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White version only), or a 1999 PowerBook G3 (Bronze version only).

Duplexer is intended for use on both Server and Client Macintoshes.

    Installation and Documentation

Copy the system extension with the desired speed and duplex setting to your system folder and restart your computer. For example, if you wanted to run at Full Duplex 100Mbit, then you would copy the extension named "Duplexer100Full" to your system folder. Do not copy more than one duplexer file to your system folder - only the first one will work.

Please note: after the computer has restarted, you can use the Apple System Profiler to determine the current speed and duplex setting of your built in Ethernet.

    Requirements for Running Duplexer

Apple iMac, Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White version only), or 1999 PowerBook G3 (Bronze version only) using built in Ethernet, and is independent of the version or language of the Mac OS system software installed; however, this software does not work with Mac OS X.

    Support

Duplexer is an unsupported tool and therefore is not supported by Apple Computer, Inc.

    Notes About Duplexer

    General
    • Do not rename the extensions and they must load as early as possible.
    • All failures and errors are printed directly to the screen. It will overwrite anything on the screen and will not "redraw" nicely. This is the only way to show errors at this time.

    Duplexer Resource Format
    • You can use a standard resource editing program (like ResEdit) to customize it. Only make changes on a copy of the files.
    • Set the 'PREF' #128 "debugFlag" to be 0x00000001 to see various progress and debugging information printed directly to your screen.
    • Set the 'PREF' #129 "Duplex Setting" to one of the following settings:
0x00000001 to get 10 Mbit, half duplex
0x00000002 to get 10 Mbit, full duplex
0x00000003 to get 100 Mbit, half duplex
0x00000004 to get 100 Mbit, full duplex
0x00000005 to get Auto Negotiation (or just remove Duplexer from the system folder)
