About the Font Manager Updater This document tells you how to use the Font Manager Updater, which includes the Font Manager Update extension and the Font First Aid utility. The Font Manager Update extension fixes the following problems in the Mac OS 8.6 Font Manager: Important: The Update prevents the Font Manager from creating corrupt FOND resources, and eliminates problems caused by these corrupt resources. However, the update will not correct or remove any previously corrupted resources. To repair damaged files on your computer or on disks that are connected to your computer, you must use the Font First Aid utility. Who should install the updater and use the utility? All users of Mac OS 8.6 should install the Font Manager Update and use the Font First Aid utility. Important: Using Font First Aid to repair bad FONDs in applications changes resources in the application. Some applications check for changed resources and may not run if they detect them. Make sure that you have a backup copy of all your applications so you can reinstall them if necessary. Installing the updater and using the Font First Aid utility
2. Restart your computer. 3. Double-click the Font First Aid icon. You cannot use Font First Aid before installing the Font Manager Update, or on a computer that is using a version of system software earlier than 8.6. Note: Font First Aid will not repair files on servers connected to your computer. To fix files on a server, you must run the utility on the server. To repair files on locked media, first unlock and then launch Font First Aid. 4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. Font First Aid will tell you the number of files that it can scan, and offer the option to fix all the files at the same time or scan and fix them one by one. To have Font First Aid fix any files that were damaged by the Font Manager, click Fix All. To control which files are fixed, click Scan. Each time Font First Aid finds a damaged file, it will tell you which file is damaged and ask you if you want to repair the file. Note: If you encounter an error while Font First Aid is scanning it may be due to corrupted files on the disk. Try running Disk First Aid before attempting another scan with Font First Aid. This is necessary to allow the Font Manager Update to be active even when the system is booted with extensions off. |
