TOPIC

This article discusses why the desktop pattern resets after a custom install of Mac OS 8.5 components.

DISCUSSION

On iMac and Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White) computers, when the Mac OS 8.5.x Installer is run, a subcomponent of the Installer is run in the background to install CPU-specific software support for these computers. During this part of the install process, the Mac OS Preferences file is replaced. The Mac OS Preferences file stores some Appearance-related information such as the desktop pattern, Large System Font, and text Highlight Color.

If you have added a Desktop Picture (using the Appearance Control Panel), this preference is stored in the Desktop Pictures Prefs file. This file is not replaced by the Mac OS Installer.
