TOPIC

I started using iMovie in 800x600 resolution, and later I started using it with my monitor set to 1024x768. I noticed that there are more Shelf Spaces in the higher resolution. I have iMovie set to import clips to the Shelf. In the lower resolution, I get an error that the shelf is full, and I don't get the error capturing the same amount of clips in 1024x768. Why is this happening?

DISCUSSION

iMovie was designed to work best in 1024x768 resolution, in thousands or millions of colors.

The iMac supports four monitor resolutions: 640x480, 800x600, 832x624 and 1024x768. iMovie will not open with the resolution set to 640x480. When using iMovie in 800x600 and 832x624 resolutions, the Shelf has nine Shelf Spaces. In 1024x768 resolution there are 12 Shelf Spaces.

When capturing clips from your camera onto the Shelf, iMovie will automatically create a separate clip and put it into a new Shelf Space every time a scene break is detected. These Shelf Spaces can fill up quickly depending on the number of times you stopped and started recording when you initially shot your source footage. To avoid filling up all Shelf Space, which disables further capturing until space is cleared, there are a few options:
    • In the Preferences, under Edit, go to the Import Tab. Here you can select the destination of the imported clips. By selecting to import clips directly to the timeline, you can avoid filling the Shelf with newly captured clips.
    • In the Preferences dialog, uncheck the box "Automatically start new clip at scene break."
