TOPIC

Should I be worried about the security of my files if I enable File Sharing clients to connect over TCP/IP?

DISCUSSION

Your files should be as secure when you enable File Sharing clients to connect over TCP/IP as when they connect over AppleTalk. Keep the following in mind no matter which networking protocol you choose to use:

    • Do not allow guests to connect to your computer.
        1. Click on the Users & Groups tab.
        2. Highlight the user "Guest" and click Open.
        3. Choose Sharing from the Show pop-up menu.
        4. Make sure "Allow guests to connect to this computer" is not checked.
    • Choose good user names and passwords that include alphanumeric characters.
    • Do not share your entire hard disk. Only share folders that are necessary.
    • Encrypt sensitive files using the Encrypt command in the Finder's File menu.
