TOPIC

When the Software Update control panel says there is an update, and I ask it to install it, the control panel hangs when trying to quit other applications.

DISCUSSION

Software Update first tries to quit all non-background applications, by bringing them to the foreground and sending them a quit request (AppleEvent). Software Update then waits until the application quits. If after waiting for a period of time the requested application has not terminated, Software Update assumes there is some problem or delay in quitting the application, and it terminates the update action without issuing any message. Software Update will likely be the frontmost application after this has happened.

To workaround this, quit all applications, responding to save document dialogs as necessary. When all applications have quit, then initiate the Software Update operation.
