TOPIC

I've set up a number of users using the Multiple Users control panel in Mac OS 9. However, I've noticed that when I try to switch network settings as a user other than the Owner using the Location Manager control strip, not all of the settings change the way I would expect.

DISCUSSION

Normal, Limited, and Panels users do not have access privileges to change network or File Sharing settings. So, Location scripts that attempt to change these settings will fail if launched in these environments. In turn, Location Manager may stop functioning properly if this is attempted. Location Manager also gives the user access to other settings that the Owner/Administrator may not want changed.

If you need to allow users other than the Owner to change network settings, consider setting Location Manager to ask the user for a location during the startup process. You can find this setting in the Location Manager control panel by choosing Preferences (see figure 1 below) from the Edit menu. Using this method will allow users to change their location _before_ logging in as a specific user, but each user will need to restart the machine to change locations.

In order to prevent users other than the owner from experiencing difficulties when using Location Manager in the Finder or Panels environment, consider one or more of the following:
    • Relocate or duplicate the Location Manager control panel to a folder on the hard drive that is only accessible by the users you intend to give access to these controls.
    • Disable the Location Manager control strip module by removing it from the Control Strip Modules folder located at the root level of the System Folder.
    • And/or, Disable individual Location Manager modules located in the Location Manager Modules folder in the Extensions folder to completely prevent attempts to change specific settings using Location Manager.
