TOPIC

After installing Mac OS 9, whenever I open the Network Browser my computer dials out to my ISP. Under previous versions of the Mac OS this did not occur. Why does this occur, and how can I stop it?

DISCUSSION

Mac OS 9's Network Browser allows for browsing of certain TCP/IP based services (Web, File, FTP). If the TCP/IP Control Panel is configured to connect via "PPP" and the Remote Access Control Panel is configured to "Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications" then a connection attempt will be initiated when opening the Network Browser.

Should you not desire this behavior, use the Chooser to browse for AppleTalk services then Network Browser will not initiate any dial-up connections. Alternatively, deselecting the "Connect Automatically when starting TCP/IP applications" option within the Remote Access Control Panel will allow you to browse AppleTalk services within the Network Browser, but will require that you manually initiate a connection to your ISP to browse TCP/IP-based services.

Under previous versions of the Mac OS the Network Browser's functionality was limited to browsing of AppleTalk services only and thus did not produce this behavior.
