TOPIC

I'm trying to upgrade my system software to Mac OS 9. When the computer is started up from the hard disk I get the following message:

"This Computer requires that you boot from the Mac OS 9 CD to perform the installation."

DISCUSSION

Installing Mac OS 9 on all Power Macintosh 6100, 7100, 8100 family computers requires that the computer be started up under Mac OS 9--usually from the CD. The Mac OS 9 installer makes sure that NuBus-based computers such as these are running Mac OS 9 before it will continue with an installation.

You can install Mac OS 9 on these computers by either:
    • Starting up from the Mac OS 9 installation disc and then running the installer
    • Starting up from an external hard drive that already has Mac OS 9 installed

Installing to an internal drive in one of these computers can be completed by:
    • inserting the Mac OS 9 install disc on a locally attached CD-ROM drive
    • sharing the Mac OS 9 disc from another computer, then connecting to that volume over a network
    • copying the installation files to the same external hard drive the computer used to start up
