Using Japanese Mac OS 9, I filled in owner name, owner password, and computer name with Japanese characters using Kotoeri. After enabling Multiple Users, I cannot login.
DISCUSSION Although the File Sharing control panel supports double-byte character input, the Multiple Users Login panel in Mac OS 9 is not double-byte aware. Multiple Users will not recognize passwords created with double-byte input methods. File Sharing in Japanese Mac OS 9 defaults the owner password to US (Roman characters) but allows the use other input methods (Japanese characters). If you plan on using Multiple Users on a double-byte-aware Mac OS, you should use the default Roman input method for passwords. If you have created a double-byte password and enabled Multiple Users, to get logged in as the owner, you must start up with Extensions off, by holding the Shift key while restarting, and then throw away the Multi-User Prefs file from the Preferences folder. Enter new data in the File Sharing control panel using a Roman input method, before enabling Multiple Users again. |
