TOPIC
This article explains why a Macintosh computer may appear to stop responding when the Calculate Folder Sizes option is selected.
DISCUSSION
SymptomOn a Macintosh computer running Mac OS 8.1 and AppleShare 6, the computer appears to stop responding when you open a folder on a server volume. This occurs if the window is set to View as List and the option to Calculate Folder Sizes is selected. Products affectedSolutionThis will happen if you do not have read access to all of the folders in this window. Your computer will appear to stop responding with the network arrows visible in the upper left corner of the screen while the Finder attempts to calculate the size of the folder to which you do not have access. You will be able to continue working on your computer, but performance will be slow until you deselect the option to Calculate Folder Sizes. Your computer will also stop responding if you attempt to Get Info on a folder to which you do not have read access. This issue is has been resolved in Mac OS 8.5 and later. |
