DISCUSSION

On 2000-10-10 Apple released the public preview of QuickTime 5. The purpose of this preview release is to allow developers and users to test and provide feedback on the next generation of digital media technology.

While every effort has been taken to assure the reliability of the QuickTime 5 Preview, it is important to understand that it is trial, prerelease, time-limited software meant for evaluation and development purposes only. The Preview release should not be used in a commercial operating environment or with important data. Before installing QuickTime 5 Preview, you should back up all of your data and regularly make backups while using the software.

Of the many enhancements in QuickTime 5, one of the best for Final Cut Pro users is a new DV CODEC. This new CODEC provides enhanced render performance and a number of quality improvements. However, there are several known issues that affect Final Cut Pro when working with the new DV CODEC included with the QuickTime 5 Public Preview.

    • Playing back long DV clips on computers with dual microprocessors and Mac OS ROM version 5.5.1 causes the computer to stop responding, or "freeze." This issue does not occur on computers with a single microprocessor, or dual-processor computers with ROM versions prior to 5.5.1.
    • Video playback in the Log & Capture window on computers with dual microprocessors and Mac OS ROM version 5.5.1 causes the computer to stop responding, or "freeze."
    • The FireWire output of certain types of images, for example a composite of a 2-color gradient, displays and records incorrectly (it will have jaggies) on Panasonic, Canon, and possibly other DV camcorders.

Note: You may use one of these methods to identify your computer's Mac OS ROM version:

    Option 1 (preferred)
Use Apple System Profiler. The ROM file version is listed under "Production Information".

    Option 2
From the Finder, Choose About This Computer from the Apple menu. If the computer has ROM version 5.5.1 it will be displayed. Not all ROM versions prior to 5.5.1 are displayed in this dialog.
