TOPIC

This article explains how to set up iTunes to make a high-quality audio CD.

DISCUSSION

Follow these steps to make a high-quality audio CD using iTunes:
      1. Choose Preferences from the Edit menu.
      2. Click the Advanced tab (iTunes 1.0.x) or the Importing tab (iTunes 1.1).
      3. Choose AIFF Encoder from the Import Using pop-up menu. See note 1.
      4. Insert an audio CD.
      5. Make sure the checkbox next to the names of the songs (tracks) that you want to include on your disc is checked and click Import. Repeat this step until you've imported all the songs you want to put on the disc. See note 2.
      6. Choose New Playlist from the File menu.
      7. Type a name for the playlist and press Return.
      8. Click the Library icon in the Source list.
      9. Drag the songs you want to include on the disc to the new playlist.
      10. In the playlist, drag the songs into the order you want to hear them. The approximate total time of the songs in the list is displayed at the bottom of the window. (It does not include the Preferece setting for the amount of silence you've selected between songs.) Most discs can hold a maximum of 74 minutes of music.
      11. Click Burn CD.
      12. Insert a blank CD-R disc.
      13. Click Burn CD again.

It takes several minutes to write the disc.

    Notes
      1. Music on an audio CD is not compressed. Compressing music from an audio CD reduces the sound quality. Encoding music using the AIFF encoder preserves the high-quality sound found on the CD. If you intend to use iTunes to make a custom audio CD from your audio CD collection, you should always use the AIFF encoder.
      2. AIFF encoding requires much more hard disk space than MP3 encoding because AIFF is not compressed. You might want to make sure you have enough free hard disk space before importing many songs. A typical audio CD is about 650 MB.
