This document contains installation and download information for the most recent versions of Apple's ProfileLibraries for OPENSTEP 4.2.

The OPENSTEP Current Patch List, TIL article 70033 , contains information on all available patches and workarounds for all versions of OPENSTEP, including EOF patches. Please read this document if you're not sure which patches you need on your system.

About The Libraries

Apple's ProfileLibraries and the gprof profiling tool allow developers to run certain performance tests on their OPENSTEP applications. The gprof tool depends on special versions of the AppKit and Foundation libraries, and it is important that these libraries match the non-profiler libraries used for development and deployment. For this reason, Apple has prepared updated ProfileLibraries which include all Foundation and AppKit changes included in OPENSTEP 4.2 for Mach Patch 3 . If you have this patch installed, installing these libraries will allow you to take advantage of these framework changes while using gprof. Non-developers and develoepers not using gprof for performance testing do not need to download this package.

Installing the updated ProfileLibraries

1. Download the Mach version of the libraries from Apple's FTP site at ftp.info.apple.com. The file is located at:

ftp://ftp.info.apple.com//Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/MultiCountry/Enterprise/openstep/patches/4.2Mach_PLib_Patch2.compressed

2. Uncompress the Mach package file. Your web browser or FTP client may perform this step for you.

3. Log in as root . If you're not sure how to log in as root, see your system administrator.

4. Double-click on the 4.2_Mach_ProfileLibs_Patch2.pkg file. Make sure that no OPENSTEP applications are running before you do this step.

5. Click the Install button in the Installer package window. An Install Package panel will open.

6. Click 'Install' in the Install Package panel and, when prompted for confirmation, click OK to proceed. The Installer window displays information about the progress of the installation, which may take several minutes.

NOTE: Some versions of OmniWeb for OPENSTEP Mach add a .Z extension to downloaded files, causing uncompression errors. To correct this problem, find the downloaded file in the file system and remove the .Z extension before uncompressing it.
