TOPIC

This document describes in general terms the types of Sun Sparc hardware supported by NeXTSTEP Release 3.3 and OPENSTEP for Mach release 4.x.

NOTE: Apple Enterprise Software has suspended on-going development of new drivers and hardware support for the NeXTSTEP and OPENSTEP product lines. If you have specific requirements for drivers for hardware not currently supported, contact your AES sales representative for a quote for custom development work.

    GENERAL SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

    CPU

      • Sun microSPARC II, SuperSPARC II, and SuperSPARC single processor workstations ( see http://www.sun.com/ ) models
      • SPARCstation 4: 85
      • SPARCstation 5: 85 & 110
      • SPARCstation 10: 50, 60, & 90
      • SPARCstation 20: 50, 51, 61, & 71

    AVAILABLE HARD DISK SPACE

      • User Environment:150 MB minimum, 250 MB recommended for stand-alone systems.
      • User + Developer: Environments: 330 MB minimum, 400 MB recommended.

    RAM REQUIREMENTS

RAM requirements vary depending upon the user's selection of graphics adapter. NEXTSTEP Release 3.3 supports a maximum of 256MB of memory.

      • 24-bit color: 16 MB RAM Mininum, 32 MB RAM Recommended
      • 8-bit grayscale/color: 16 MB RAM Minimum, 24 MB RAM Recommended

    GRAPHICS ADAPTERS

8-bit color and grayscale at 1152x900 or 24-bit color at 1152x900 with appropriate video system. Release 3.3 supports multiple monitors with graphics cards for expanded desktop space.

    MASS STORAGE

Floppy disk drive, SCSI hard disk drives, CD-ROM drives, 1/4 inch tape drives, Exabyte tape drives, and DAT tape drives are supported.

    KEYBOARD & POINTING DEVICES

Sun keyboard and Sun optical or mechanical mouse.

    PRINTERS

PostScript printers connected via a serial or parallel port. Color PostScript Level II printers are recommended for proper color support.

    NETWORKING

Thick, thin, and twisted pair ethernet on board interfaces are supported. Ethernet transceivers may be necessary for installation at particular sites.

    SOUND

16-bit audio at 22 and 44 khz is supported.

    INSTALLATION

A Sun SCSI CDROM, or a supported network adapter and properly configured network installation host are required for installation of NEXTSTEP.
