TOPIC

This article discusses which operating system, web browser, web server, and databases work with WebObjects.

DISCUSSION

What platforms does WebObjects run on?

The supported OS releases for the various WebObjects releases are:

    • WebObjects 2.0 runs on NT 3.51 & 4.0b2, HP-UX 9.03 & 10.10, Solaris 2.4 & 2.5, and NeXTSTEP 3.3
    • WebObjects 3.0 runs on NT 3.51 & 4.0, HP-UX 10.10, Solaris 2.5 & 2.5.1, and OpenStep for Mach 4.0
    • WebObjects 3.1 runs on NT 3.51 & 4.0, HP-UX 10.10, Solaris 2.5 & 2.5.1, and OpenStep for Mach 4.1
    • WebObjects 3.5.1 runs on NT 4.0, HP-UX 10.20, Solaris 2.5.1 & 2.6, and OpenStep for Mach 4.2
    • WebObjects 4.0 runs on NT 4.0 with service pack 3 or 4, HP-UX 10.20, and Solaris 2.6
    • WebObjects 4.01 runs on NT 4.0 with service pack 3 or 4, HP-UX 10.20, Solaris 2.6 and 2.7, Mac OS X Server 1.0 and 1.2
    • WebObjects 4.5 runs on NT 4.0 with service pack 4 or 5, HP-UX 11, Solaris 2.6 and 2.7, and Mac OS X Server 1.2
    • WebObjects 4.5.1 Developer runs on Windows NT 4.0 with service pack 4 or 5 and Windows 2000 Professional, Mac OS X 10.0, and Mac OS X Server 1.2
    • WebObjects 4.5.1 Deployment runs on Windows NT 4.0 with service pack 4 or 5 and Windows 2000 Professional, HP-UX 11, Solaris 2.6 and 2.7, Mac OS X Server 1.2, and Mac OS X Server 10.0

Windows NT support is for Workstation and Server, on Intel hardware only. NeXTSTEP/OPENSTEP support is for Intel and Motorola 68k hardware only. Solaris support is for Sun hardware only. Windows 95 or Windows 98 is not supported as a development or deployment platform. For information on Windows 2000 support, see article 70126: " WebObjects: WebObjects and Windows 2000 " .

Is WebObjects 4.x supported on Solaris 2.8?

WebObjects 4.0.1 and WebObjects 4.5 have been tested on Solaris 6 (Solaris 2.6) and Solaris 7 (Solaris 2.7). However, WebObjects 4.0.1 or WebObjects 4.5 has not been tested on Solaris 8 (Solaris 2.8), so that configuration is not supported. Only operating systems that have been tested with WebObjects are supported.

Which web server and server adaptor version should I use?

In general, each WebObjects server adaptor was tested with the release of WebObjects with which it shipped. That is, the NSAPI 3.0 adaptor, which shipped with WebObjects 3.5.1 but not WebObjects 3.0, was tested with WebObjects 3.5.1 but not with WebObjects 3.0 or any earlier version. The exception to this is the NSAPI 1.1 adaptor, which was not tested with WebObjects 3.5.1 due to software availability.

    The NSAPI Adaptor

Each release of the NSAPI adaptor was tested with the Netscape server version with the same release number; thus, the NSAPI 3.0 adaptor was tested with Netscape Server 3.0. All tested Netscape servers were tested under Windows NT, Solaris, and HP-UX. For WebObjects 4.0, the NSAPI adaptor was tested with Netscape Enterprise Server 3.5.1 on all supported platforms, as well as Netscape Fasttrack Server 3.01 on Windows NT. For WebObjects 4.5, the NSAPI adaptor was tested with Netscape Enterprise Server versions 3.6 and 4.

    The ISAPI Adaptor

    For the ISAPI adaptor

    • WebObjects 2.0 was tested with IIS 1.0
    • WebObjects 3.0 was tested with IIS 1.0, IIS 2.0, and PWS 2.0
    • WebObjects 3.1 was tested with IIS 1.0, IIS 2.0, and PWS 2.0
    • WebObjects 3.5.1 was tested with IIS 2.0, IIS 3.0, IIS 4.0b, and PWS 2.0
    • WebObjects 4 was tested with IIS 3.0, IIS 4.0b3 and PWS 2.0
    • WebObjects 4.5 was tested with IIS 4.0

IIS 2.0 is no longer supported under WebObjects 4 or 4.5.

    The ApacheAPI Adaptor

The ApacheAPI adaptor that shipped with WebObjects 4 was tested with Apache 1.3.2 on HP-UX and Solaris. The ApacheAPI adaptor that shipped with WebObjects 4.5 was tested with Apache 1.3.6 on Solaris and HP-UX and with Apache 1.3.9 on Mac OS X Server.

    The CGI Adaptor

All servers that were tested with an API-specific adaptor were also tested with the generic CGI adaptor. The CGI adaptor that shipped with each release of WebObjects was also tested with the version of the Apache web server that shipped with that release, if any.

    Which browsers have been tested?

WebObjects has always been tested with the latest available release of Netscape Navigator or Communicator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and OmniWeb. In addition, one older release of each browser was tested.

    Which databases have been tested?

WebObjects 4.5 was tested with the following:

    • Oracle 8.0.3
    • Sybase 11.0.2
    • Informix 7.11.UC1
    • Microsoft SQL Server 7.0
    • MS-Access 98 driver version # 4.00.4202.00
    • OpenBase Lite
