    About iMovie for Mac OS X (Web download)

    iMovie for Mac OS X is a digital video (DV) editing application that works with Mac OS X. iMovie integrates digital video capture, scene editing, titling, transitions, video effects, and audio to create broadcast-quality movies.

    The Web download version of iMovie for Mac OS X does not include the tutorial that accompanies the CD version.

    Minimum system requirements

    You need a digital video camera and FireWire cable to make movies with iMovie. For a list of supported digital cameras, go to http://www.apple.com/imovie/shoot.html

    In addition, you need a computer with at least the following specifications:

    • Power Mac G3 or G4 desktop computer, PowerBook, iMac, or iBook
    • FireWire port
    • 128 megabytes (MB) random access memory (RAM)
    • 2 gigabytes (GB) hard disk space
    • Mac OS X installed

    To view your movies with a television or VCR, you also need cables to connect your DV device to the television or VCR.

    Installing iMovie

    Drag the "iMovie for Mac OS X" folder to the Applications folder on your Mac OS X disk. You must install it on your hard disk before you open it.

    If you can't drag the "iMovie for Mac OS X" folder to the Applications folder because you do not have sufficient privileges, log out and log back in as the administrator of your Mac OS X computer. (The administrator's name is listed in the Users pane of System Preferences. For more information, see "Working as an administrator" in Mac Help.)

    Retain the iMovie for Mac OS X.smi so that it is available in case you wish to reinstall iMovie at some time.

    Using iMovie

    To start iMovie, open the "iMovie for Mac OS X" folder on your hard disk and double-click the iMovie application icon. To learn how to use iMovie, see the iMovie online help. In iMovie, choose iMovie Help from the Help menu.

    Plug in any required devices before opening iMovie. Do not unplug devices while iMovie is open.
