TOPIC When an AppleShare IP 6.x mail server obtains email using the POP (Post Office Protocol) account collection method, some email is sent to the Postmaster instead of the intended recipient. DISCUSSION
Symptom When using the POP mail collection feature of AppleShare IP 6.x mail server to get email from an ISP's (Internet Service Provider) mail server, some email is sent to the Apple Share IP Postmaster's mailbox instead of the intended user's mailbox. This happens most often with mailing lists. Products affected Solution This misrouting of email is inherent in the way that POP delivery works. To avoid this situation, use SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) to have email delivered to your AppleShare mail server. If do not have a dedicated Internet connection, AppleShare IP 6.0 and later provide ETRN (Extended Turn), which can query your ISP's mail server periodically for new email. ETRN is an extension of SMTP, so all of the SMTP commands are maintained when your server connects to your ISP. For details on setting up ETRN with an intermittent connection, see Tech Info Library article 30570: "AppleShare IP Mail Server: Dialup Send & Receive Setup. " Note: For an explanation of this limitation of the POP collection method, see Tech Info Library article 86030: " POP Mail Collection Relies on Header Information. " |
