    Some third-party applications used in a Macintosh Manager environment may allow users access to areas of the file system from which Macintosh Manager would normally restrict them.

DISCUSSION

    Symptom

    Using certain applications in a Macintosh Manager environment, users have access to an area of the file system that would otherwise be restricted by Macintosh Manager. This may occur through an open or save dialog box. It might also happen, for example, in the Recent Items feature of a word processing application.

    Solution

    Macintosh Manager limits calls for file system access that an application makes when the application uses standard Mac OS system calls. If a third-party application uses proprietary (nonstandard) calls for access, Macintosh Manager used with Mac OS 8.x does not limit them.

    There are two solutions for administrators whose users are affected by this issue:
    • Update affected client computers to Mac OS 9.x. Mac OS 9 used with Macintosh Manager restricts proprietary calls in addition to standard calls.
    • Contact the maker of the application software to check for updates to the affected application or to request that one be released.
