TOPIC

Using TCP/IP-based applications like Web browsers and email clients may result in a generic DNS error.

DISCUSSION

    Symptom

Applications such as Web browsers and email clients are not able to resolve DNS names like "www.apple.com" to their numerical IP addresses, such as "17.254.3.183."

This may result in a variety of errors, which are dependent up on the application generating them. It may create an initial impression that a computer does not have Internet connectivity.

    Products affected

    • Mac OS 7.6
    • Macintosh Manager

    Solution
      1. Open the Macintosh Manager admin application.
      2. Add the MacTCP DNR file to the list of approved items for the affected workgroup.

To verify that an affected workstation is affected by this issue and has not actually lost Internet connectivity, you may enter " http://17.254.3.183 " in the address field of a Web browser. If you see the Apple Web site, you are experiencing a DNS issue.
