    The following instructions explain how to remove the wireless antenna board on the iMac computer.


DISCUSSION

    This article covers repair procedures for authorized service providers on selected Apple products, but we have published them in the Knowledge Base for the general public for educational purposes. At this time, there are a limited number of repairs that a customer can perform and these are covered under the customer installable parts program http://www.info.apple.com/installparts . If you have not been authorized to perform these procedures, please contact Apple (800-APL-CARE in the USA) or your local authorized service provider to schedule a repair.

    DANGER! This procedure exposes you to high voltages that can result in death or serious injury. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS PROCEDURE IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN CERTIFIED AS AN APPLE-AUTHORIZED TECHNICIAN.

    The wireless antenna board is shown below in Figure 1.

    Products

    • iMac (Slot-Loading), iMac (Summer 2000)

    Tools Required

    • Phillips screwdriver (#1 and #2), long shaft
    • Jeweler's screwdriver, flatblade
    • ESD mat

    Procedure

    Before you begin :

    Position the computer upside-down, resting the computer on an ESD mat or other soft surface and remove the following:

    • antenna from the AirPort card, article 95072- iMac: Removing the AirPort Card
    • bottom housing, article 95067 - iMac: Removing the Bottom Housing
    • front outer bezel, article 95080 - iMac: Removing the Front Outer Bezel
    • top rear housing, article 95081- iMac: Removing the Top Rear Housing
    • power/analog board (steps 1-11), article 95082- iMac: Removing the Power/Analog/Video Board

      1. Warning : This product contains high voltage and a high-vacuum picture tube. To prevent serious injury, discharge the CRT.
      2. Remove the antenna from the AirPort Card (if installed) or from the clear antenna holder located near the SDRAM DIMMs.
      3. Remove the three screws and cable clip on the antenna circuit board. See Figure 2 below.

      4. Note how the antenna wire is routed through the side panel before removing. A close-up view of the right panel antenna is shown below. Carefully remove the antenna from the right side panel. See Figure 3 below.

      5. Remove the antenna from the left side panel. See Figure 4 below.

      6. Figure 5 shows a close-up view of the antenna in the left side panel.

      7. Before removing the antenna from the divider panel, mark the hole (with a pen tip) that the antenna passes through so you know which hole the antenna goes into when replacing the antenna. See Figure 6 below.

      8. Figure 7 shows the wireless antenna board removed from the divider panel.

    Note : Wireless internet access requires AirPort Card, AirPort Base Station, and Internet Access (fees may apply). Some ISPs are not currently compatible with AirPort, including America Online. Range may vary with site conditions.
