TOPIC

The PowerBook 165c can be expanded to 14MB of RAM. This article provides details.

DISCUSSION

The PowerBook 165c can be expanded to 14MB of RAM. There is 4MB of memory on the logic board, and one memory slot. The slot is similar to the PowerBook 100, 140, 145, and 170 memory connector -- but uses an unused pin to determine the speed of the RAM chips installed. If existing RAM cards (100ns) are used, an extra wait state will be included when the system accesses that memory.

The PowerBook 165c runs faster if 85ns chips are used. The M4664 4MB card should be used with the PowerBook 165c. The slower 100ns card (M1033) will be phased out when inventory is exhausted.

PowerBook 165c RAM Speed and Wait States:
    * 85ns (recommended) with two wait states
    * 100ns with three wait states

Third-party memory cards designed for the PowerBook 160 and PowerBook 180 may not fit the PowerBook 165c.
