This article describes the Newton Connection Kit for Macintosh.
DISCUSSION With the Newton Connection Kit for Macintosh v 1.0, you can connect your Newton to a Macintosh and view, edit, back up and synchronize information created on the MessagePad. Version 2.0 will add the ability to share information between Macintosh desktop applications and a Newton MessagePad. You will be able to share MessagePad information such as notes, letters, names cards with common Macintosh desktop applications, and use these Macintosh applications to edit your MessagePad information. The kit comes complete with software, a serial cable, and a handbook. The cable is the same as the Mini DIN-8 peripheral cable, but is black instead of gray. You can connect your Newton to the Macintosh either through the Macintosh's serial port, or via LocalTalk over a network. Synchronization --------------- The Connection Kit automatically synchronizes information between the Newton and the computer. The information is stored by files and includes both data and applications. The information in the Macintosh can be viewed and edited, then downloaded back to the Newton. Templates are used to view and edit the information, so you can do text-intensive work with a keyboard and move it directly to your Newton. Synchronization creates three files. One is the Macintosh's view of Newton's memory. An archive file keeps an accumulative copy of all files synchronized. A backup file keeps only those files which changed from the last synchronization. Any files created during synchronization can be restored back into Newton. Install Package --------------- This option allows Newton applications (packages) to be downloaded from the Macintosh into the Newton. Newton software can be distributed on Macintosh floppy disks, installed on the computer and then downloaded. The packages can be removed just as easily, using the Newton Memory preference button labeled "Remove Software." Minimum Requirements -------------------- * A Macintosh SE/30 or later computer with at least 4 MB of RAM. * Macintosh System 7 (version 7.0 or later) * An Apple SuperDrive floppy disk drive * A hard disk drive EXTENDED Information section - Apple Internal Use - Service Providers and Support Professional APPLE EYES ONLY Information section - Apple Need-To-Know Confidential Article Change History: |
