TOPIC
This article discusses the maximum number of files that can be opened by Apple File Services.
DISCUSSION Apple File Services can handle 3 000 to 4 000 unique files open on client computers. This limit is expressed as a range because of the way Apple File Services keeps track of open files. The server has a total of 4 000 file descriptors with which it can keep track of open files. Each user who is logged in over AFP also takes one of these 4 000 file descriptors. Furthermore, a Mac OS file may have either a data fork and a resource fork. While the user perceives this as one file, the server sees it as two files for the purpose of file descriptors. Therefore, if ten users were logged on through AFP and each user had 10 files open (each file with both a data and a resource fork) this would count as 210 file descriptors against the total limit of 4 000. Note : The open file limit operates differently than in recent versions of AppleShare IP. Under AppleShare IP the server support 3 000 instances of 346 unique files. Apple File Services makes no such distinctions between unique and duplicated open files.
