Common error messages users may experience when downloading files from the Internet using a Mac OS computer.
DISCUSSION Common Error Messages and Explanations: "-39" error when opening a self-mounting image (smi) or "This file is not a complete .bin or .hqx file" error . A -39 error indicates that the file is not complete. The most common cause of this error is related to a bad or dropped connection to the server during the download process. Try downloading the file again. If you are using America Online, try using a stand-alone Web browser instead of the built-in America Online Browser (see article 59009 for more details). "Server not connected"" or "Communication exception" or "Server busy" error. This is usually a network issue between the client and the server. There is no straightforward way to determine where the issue lies, so your best bet is to try to connect to the server again. Try connecting to another site; this would indicate if the issue is with your connection or only with the site you are trying to reach. "Checksum invalid" message from Disk Copy when mounting a disk image or opening a self-mounting image (smi). All disk images are created and validated in a clean room environment. The checksum is a way for a disk image program to verify all information for the given image is there. If you get repeated checksum data failure messages after several downloads of the same file from several servers, you should try downloading a different file. If that file's checksum is valid and the image mounts, then the first file you downloaded is indeed damaged and you should report it to the webmasters at http://www.info.apple.com/feedback . Check your hard drive using Disk First Aid and try to download the file again. Files that end with ".exe" won't open. Files that end with a .exe are designed for use with computers running Windows or DOS. You can use these files through software such as Real PC, SoftWindows, or Virtual PC, all of which provide PC emulation for Mac OS. Disk Copy or Disk Image Mounter does not recognize the files as disk images. Files downloaded from our servers are encoded in both MacBinary and Binhex formats . Client software like Fetch and Internet Explorer decodes software as it is downloaded. Other client software like Netscape launches a helper application like StuffIt to decode software after it is downloaded. The name of the file you are trying to open with Disk Copy should end with .img, .smi, or .part and not .bin or .hqx. If the file name ends in .bin or .hqx, you would need to use a utility like StuffIt Expander to decode it. I have a disk image with a lock on it. I tried to mount the disk with ShrinkWrap with no luck. Disk Copy from Apple is the recommended application to access all disk images released by Apple and the only supported application to access New Disk Image Format (NDIF) disk images; Disk Copy 6.1 (or later) is the only supported application to create NDIF disk images. If you have System Software 7.0.1 or higher, you would need Disk Copy 6.3.3 to work with disk images. ShrinkWrap engine or ShrinkWrap reports error -108. These errors are caused by the Disk Mounting feature of Stuffit Expander. Disk Copy 6.1 (or later) from Apple is the recommended application to access all disk images released by Apple and the only supported application to access New Disk Image Format (NDIF) disk images. Find Stuffit Expander on your hard disk and open it. From the File menu, select Preferences. In the column of icons on the left, select "Disk Images" and then deselect "Mount Images." If this does not resolve the issue, go back to the Preferences dialog, select the "Expanding" icon, and deselect "Continue to expand (if possible)." Error message saying "Username anonymous unknown."
