TOPIC

Apple DVD Player may not work after upgrading to Mac OS 9.1.

DISCUSSION

    Symptom

After upgrading your computer to Mac OS 9.1, an alert box with the following message appears when you open the Apple DVD Player application:

"Apple DVD Player does not support the video card used for the main screen."
    Products affected
    • iMac (Slot Loading)
    • Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics)
    • PowerBook (FireWire)
    Solution

Note: If you are running the North American English version of Mac OS 9.1, you may download and install Apple DVD Player 2.4 here . Other languages will follow.

The reason this error occurs is because Apple DVD Player was not upgraded to version 2.2 before Mac OS 9.1 Update was installed. Mac OS 9.1 requires Apple DVD Player 2.2 or later. It is not compatible with Apple DVD Player 2.0b (included with Mac OS 8.6) or Apple DVD Player 2.0 (included with Mac OS 9.0 through 9.0.3). Apple DVD Player 2.2 is available from Apple Software Updates at http://www.apple.com/swupdates/ .

If you try to install Apple DVD Player 2.2 on a computer that has been upgraded to Mac OS 9.1 using the downloadable update (instead of the CD-ROM update) an alert box with the following message appears:

"Apple DVD player cannot be installed onto a volume which does not contain a US, British, or International English release of Mac OS 9.0.1 or newer."

To install Apple DVD Player 2.2 software, do the following:
      1. Restart the computer from the System Install CD. See article 43038: " Troubleshooting Handbook: Starting Up From a CD ."
      2. Perform a Clean Installation of Mac OS 9.0.2, 9.0.3 or 9.0.4. This will install a new System Folder on the hard disk and rename the current System Folder to Previous System Folder. See article 60496: " Mac OS 9: Performing a Clean Installation ." (See Note 1.)
      3. When the installation is finished, quit the installer and install Apple DVD Player 2.2.
      4. When the installation is finished, quit the installer and move the Apple DVD Player folder from the Applications folder to the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder. You may see an alert box that says an older item of the same name exists here, and would you like to replace it. Click OK.
      5. Open the System Folder
      6. Open the Extensions folder
      7. Drag the following extensions to the root level of the hard disk:
      - DVD AutoLauncher
      - DVD Decoder Library (This may only be present on iMac computers)
      - DVD Navigation Manager
      - DVD Region Manager
      - DVD Runtime Lib
      8. Drag these extensions into the Extensions folder of the Previous System Folder.
      9. Drag the following folders to the Trash:
      - System Folder
      - Applications (Warning: DO NOT move the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder)
      - Apple Extras
      - Assistants
      - Internet
      - Utilities
      - Web pages
      10. Rename the Previous System Folder to System Folder.
      11. Rebless this System Folder by opening it, then opening the System file (has a suitcase icon), then closing these windows.
      12. Restart the computer.
You should now have full functionality of Apple DVD Player and Mac OS 9.1.

This issue will not occur if you upgraded the computer to Mac OS 9.1 using the CD-ROM updater. The disc may be used for full installation or clean installation. If you already use Mac OS 9, you may qualify to purchase a Mac OS 9.1 disc at reduced cost. To get details, visit the Software section at http://www.apple.com/ . Be sure to choose your geographic region from the pop-up menu on the front page at http://www.apple.com/ .

    Notes:
      1. If you have Mac OS 8.6 System Install CD, you will need to update your System to Mac OS 9 and install the Mac OS 9.0.4 update. If you have Mac OS 9 System Install CD, you will also have to install the Mac OS 9.0.4 update. The Mac OS 9.0.4 update is available at http://www.apple.com/swupdates/ .
